Denise Diamond, BA, CJM

Captain Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Portland, Oregon

Hello, my name is Denise Diamond, BA, CJM. I am a Captain with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office where I have worked for over 23 years. I currently serve as the MCSO Corrections Compliance Manager where I manage projects and compliance work including PREA. I enjoy teaching classes focused on skills-based learning, especially for the American Jail Association. I am a Jail Inspector through the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association and a certified DOJ PREA Auditor.

I decided to enter the field of corrections and make it my career because...

I liked the variety of assignments and positions available. It keeps things interesting for an avid learner. There is never a dull moment.

My favorite way to relax is...

to go on vacation, somewhere warm and sunny. Since that can’t always be, reading a good book or making a scrapbook of past adventures helps me to relax.

One item from my personal "bucket list" is to...

to learn to play piano well. It’s a journey but I hope to someday play songs on the piano and sing along.

My motto is...

do what is right, at the right time, for the right reason, not because it is easy but because it is difficult. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Do what you feel in your heart to be right for you’ll be criticized anyway.” These ideals guide me daily.

I am most proud of...

being a mother to my son and a partner to my husband.

The most unusual job I’ve ever had was...

working in market research. I was young and it was interesting to ask questions and see why people vote the way that they do and why they buy specific products. You’d be surprised the reasons people give when you ask.

I felt it was important to be a member of AJA and serve on the board because...

most people don’t really know anything about the field of corrections. I think it’s imperative for us to showcase this career so the community understands the difficulties we face on a daily basis and provide us the support we need.

Three people living or deceased I'd invite to dinner are...

Pope John Paul II, and both my grandmothers who taught me how to play cards, bake, and grow flowers and vegetables.

The hardest thing I've ever done is...

being a working mom. Anyone who has this role knows how difficult it can be, to be on at work and on at home after a busy day. All working parents should be commended.

My favorite meal is...

pepperoni pizza followed by any kind of chocolate.

You would be surprised to learn that...

I was once a performer on my college dance team.

One piece of advice that I would give anyone considering correction as a career is...

it won’t be easy, but you’ll become more than you knew you could be. The challenges make us into better versions of ourselves.
