Board Profile

Sam Davis, MS, CJM

Major/Jail Administrator (Ret.) Ingham County Sheriff's Office Adjunct Staff, School of Criminal Justice, Michigan State University East Lansing, Michigan

Hello, my name is Major Sam L. Davis (Ret), MS, CJM. I am a lifetime member of AJA and serve as AJA Board Secretary. I also chair the Training and Professional Development Committee and the Leadership Track on the Conference Planning Committee. I teach nationally for AJA on Effective Communication Skills, Leadership, Dynamic Work Cultures, Verbal Judo, and other leadership topics.

I decided to enter the field of corrections and make it my career because...

The sheriff allowed me to infuse my educational background into the mission and vision of the sheriff’s corrections division. Part of that mission was to provide those in our custody with the means to improve themselves for a transition back into the community.

My favorite way to relax is...

Listening to music. My favorites include Motown and smooth jazz. I am eclectic, I find comfort in all types of music.

One item from my personal "bucket list" is to...

Play golf on one or more of the Hawaiian Islands.

My motto is...

You cannot control the wind; you can adjust your sails.

I am most proud of...

My two incredibly loving, talented, kind, and successful sons, Eric, and Brian.

The most unusual job I’ve ever had was...

Right out of high school, I realized and appreciated manual labor by working on a garbage truck. It helped me to appreciate that I was not above nor better than those who worked with their hands doing jobs that some in the world think that they are too good to do.

I felt it was important to be a member of AJA and serve on the board and commission...

AJA was the most important organization in my corrections tenure. The training, support, and guidance were essential to my and the jail’s success during my tenure as jail administrator. It was important for me to give back to the AJA by becoming a member and supporting my corrections colleagues in a servant leadership role on the Board.

Three people living or deceased I'd invite to dinner are...

My youngest son Brian, Gandhi, and MLK.

The hardest thing I've ever done is...

In my corrections life, it was my first death notification to the mother and the incarcerated brother (in my jail) that the son/brother had taken his life. Nothing about that task was easy.

My favorite meal is...

Turkey and dressing, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, crescent rolls, and whole cranberry sauce. For dessert, butter pecan ice cream. Yum, yum, yum!

You would be surprised to learn that...

I helped the original Temptations set up for a concert at Michigan State University when I was a student there. They also let me warm up with them to “My Girl.”

One piece of advice that I would give anyone considering correction as a career is...

Never compromise your integrity. Never let integrity become just another word!
