This interactive panel will explore how the foundational principles of local corrections continue to shape the field while guiding its future evolution. Featuring perspectives representing the past, present, and future of corrections, the discussion will examine how community-based correctional systems have built upon core practices, safety, accountability, and changed-behavior to incorporate evidence-based approaches, behavioral health care, and community engagement.

Panelists will discuss current challenges facing local corrections, including overcrowding, funding limitations, staffing shortages, leadership expectations, and increasing behavioral health needs. The conversation will also highlight emerging strategies such as diversion initiatives, technology-assisted supervision, trauma-informed care, and cross-agency collaboration.

By reflecting on lessons from the past while addressing modern realities, this session will explore how strengthening the fundamentals of correctional practice can support innovation, improve outcomes, and help local systems build safer and more resilient communities.
