Calvin Moore, CJM, CPM

Corrections Division Commander

Loudoun County Sheriff's Office

Loudoun County, Virginia

Hello, my name is Calvin Moore, CJM, CPM. I serve as the Corrections Division Commander for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia and have more than 20 years of experience in corrections. I’m passionate about leadership development, strengthening professionalism in the corrections field, and supporting the American Jail Association’s mission.

I decided to enter the field of corrections and make it my career because...

Corrections was not part of my original career plan. I once considered careers in law, teaching, and healthcare, but realized corrections brings many of those elements together.

The most unusual job I've ever had was...

Corrections may be the most unusual job of all, as no two days are ever the same.

I felt it was important to be a member of AJA and serve on the board because...

AJA has played an important role in my professional development. Serving on the Board allows me to give back to the profession and support the continued growth of leadership and best practices in corrections.

My favorite way to relax is...

Traveling, watching a good movie, enjoying the outdoors or a baseball game (Nationals fan, of course), and visiting vineyards or museums.

The hardest thing I've ever done is...

Leading through difficult moments in corrections, supporting staff during challenging incidents, and having the humility to admit when I’m wrong. Those experiences reinforce my commitment to helping others in this profession navigate similar challenges.

My favorite meal is...

A medium bone-in ribeye with a Maryland crab cake, paired with a good wine.

The hardest thing I've ever done is...

Adipisicing reprehenderit aliquip cupidatat anim minim excepteur amet.

My favorite meal is...

One item from my personal "bucket list" is to...

continue traveling, experiencing new places and cultures, and maybe land a small role in a movie or television show someday.

The three people, living or deceased, I'd invite to dinner are...

My grandfather, Abraham Lincoln, and Barack Obama.

I am most proud of...

mentoring people who show that leadership grows from diverse experiences, continuing my education while working full time, and staying committed to serving my community through both my career and volunteer work.

You'd be surprised to learn that...

I was named after both of my grandfathers, my first and middle name, including one I never had the chance to meet.

My motto is...

Never say, “that’s not my job,” regardless of your rank or position. I often joke that I can’t run the jail from just “this” office. It takes a strong team willing to step up to challenges, take ownership, and make decisions with confidence.

If there is one piece of advice I'd like to give to anyone considering corrections as a career, it would be...

Enter the profession with a genuine commitment to public service and helping those in custody. Stay professional, because your actions, good or bad, can reflect on the entire profession, especially in the age of social media. Corrections needs people from diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and educational experiences to move the profession forward, so if you’re interested, don’t feel like you may not fit in; talk to someone already working in the field.
