Executive Director’s Remarks
National Correctional Officers Week: A Time to Reflect & Celebrate

We are proud of what you do and thankful to have the opportunity to support your efforts. We also care deeply about our members as individuals. That is why we are focused on the challenges that you face in your jail on a daily basis, and the impact it can have on you.
“Celebrating Corrections Officers” is the focus of this issue of American Jails magazine. This issue of the magazine is one that I look forward to every year. I love the stories and the photos that are often included. Most of all we love sharing your celebratory moments with the entire corrections community.
It’s easy to get swept up in life and to forget to take the time to reflect and show appreciation. Fortunately, in 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5187, establishing the first full week of May as National Correctional Officers Week. This proclamation recognized the contributions of correctional officers and staff working in jails, prisons, and community corrections, highlighting their vital role in maintaining order and safety. National Correctional Officer Week stands as a permanent reminder to pause and reflect.
The extent to which corrections officers are celebrated is directly proportional to the level of understanding about the important role that community corrections plays in public safety. Those who are aware understand that it is a challenging, but rewarding, occupation that is often underappreciated.
The headquarters staff at the American Jail Association consider it a privilege to serve our members who work in our nation’s jails. We are proud of what you do and thankful to have the opportunity to support your efforts. We also care deeply about our members as individuals. That is why we are focused on the challenges that you face in your jail on a daily basis, and the impact it can have on you.
Thank you for all that you do. Stay safe, be proud and take some time to reflect upon the important role that you play in public safety in your community.
