In May of 1984, President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation recognizing the dedication, professionalism, and vital contributions correctional officers and staff. Since then, the first week of May has been set aside to celebrate the commitment and resilience of those who serve in corrections, both civilian and security personnel. This annual recognition highlights the essential role they play in maintaining safety and order, proving that they are far more than just "guards;" they are highly trained professionals who uphold justice.

As we mark another National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, we take a moment to honor their hard work and share how the corrections community came together in 2025 to recognize these individuals.

We have 43 full-time officers, 20 part-time officers, seven sergeants, one lieutenant, and one captain, along with four nurses, two doctors, a mental health counselor, a discharge planner, and clerical staff. Each year, we celebrate National Corrections Week with a week-long celebration to honor our officers, and show our support and appreciation. The list of activities planned for each day includes ice cream sundaes, a Sgt’s potluck meal (Sgt’s, Lt, and Capt. bring a dish for each shift), a catered pasta meal, cake, and pizza. Each year, we also raffle several items for staff. Each employee receives five tickets that can be used to win whichever raffle items they choose. We also have daily gift cards that are raffled. In addition, we design a new T-shirt each year, and each employee receives one free T-shirt with the option to purchase additional ones if they choose. We end the week with a “Captain’s Cookout” where the jail captain comes in to cook for each shift. It’s a great way to honor not only our Correction officers but also our medical, clerical, and support staff who work countless hours doing an extremely difficult job.

We played 3 games during the week—one candy jar guessing game where the winner gets a whole jar of candy, a raffle for a super-duper bag filled with tactical gear galore, and a “Guess the Supervisor’s Pet” for gift cards, with the winner announced Friday. We also had a Girl Scout Troop donate cases of cookies that were given out to deputies on each of our squads. We gave each staff member an appreciation pen, letting them know they are AWESOME!

Corrections week for us starts months in advance, with our Jail Command Staff going out into the community and asking for donations from local partners to help both their business and our staff. Once donations are collected, we put together a raffle drawing in which every corrections deputy receives a gift bag with various things. On our final day, we had a grand prize raffle drawing where everyone’s names were entered. This year, a kayak, cornhole boards, camping chairs, and two other large donations were given out. We have coffee and breakfast items at the beginning of each shift. For lunch and dinner, we brought in food from local businesses, and on the final day, we had a food truck for staff to order from.

Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Center

Dedham, Massachusetts

The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office in Massachusetts could not be more proud of the men and women who serve with honor and distinction as correctional officers at our facility, providing safety and security around the clock, every day of the year.

However, National Correctional Officers Week provides us with the opportunity to highlight their efforts and offer our sincere thanks for working with resilience, compassion, and dedication on the front lines of public safety. Their work is often unseen by the public, but never unnoticed by anyone who walks the halls with them. They carry out one of the most demanding jobs in the criminal justice system, and do it with integrity and grit, creating the model of a 21st-century correctional center.

Their efforts ensure our mission of safety, rehabilitation, and hope thrives every day. To express our gratitude, correctional officers at the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office and our staff were treated to special meals throughout the week and presented with new coolers to help carry their homemade meals. The week also included mobile ice cream trucks offering custom sundaes for all shifts.

Thank you to all our COs and staff!

Orange County Corrections Department

Orlando, Florida

May 4–10 was National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, and the Orange County Corrections Department in Orlando, Florida, went all out to make staff members feel valued. There were special menus at Staff Dining throughout the week and free popcorn daily. The popping sound and the enticing aroma contributed to a festive environment. Special thanks to Trinity Services Group for the amazing menus and more.

On Tuesday of the week, staff were recognized at the Board of County Commissioners meeting, and Mayor Demings officially proclaimed this week as National Correctional Officers and Employees Week.

Throughout the week, dress-down days offered a welcome diversion from the dress code. And OCCD takes dress-down days seriously, featuring fun themes such as tropical day, camo day, and color day.

While OCCD supports employee wellness year-round, a wellness fair brought multiple healthcare providers to the jail compound over two days. The fairs provided a wealth of information and access to various screenings.

A midweek Tri-County Bowling Challenge continued the tradition of pitting Orange County Corrections against correctional professionals in neighboring Seminole and Osceola Counties. And for the 4th consecutive year, OCCD came out on top!

And what’s a party without a food truck? Kona Ice brought its fruity flavored freezes to the jail compound two days of the week.

The week finished out in colorful fashion—literally. Staff members from various buildings wore the color assigned to their facility. A trivia competition closed out the week’s activities. A good time was had by all.

A sincere thank you goes out to everyone for their hard work each and every day. You truly are the hidden heroes!

Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office Department of Corrections

West Palm Beach, Florida

On behalf of the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office, we are proud to share the highlights of our 2025 National Correctional Officer and Employee Week celebration, held May 4-10. This cherished tradition continues to uplift the spirits of our team, strengthen bonds, and recognize the unwavering dedication of the correctional professionals who serve our community with integrity and pride.

The week was filled with enthusiasm, laughter, and appreciation as staff participated in a variety of exciting and meaningful activities. Every event was thoughtfully planned to show gratitude, promote wellness, and celebrate our collective achievements as a department.

Monday, May 5: We kicked off the week with our heartfelt Dedication of the Badges ceremony, a moving tribute to the commitment of our personnel. A delicious meal was generously provided by Christ Fellowship, setting a positive and uplifting tone for the days ahead.

Tuesday, May 6: Game Day at the Main Detention Center brought out a playful, competitive spirit, with staff eagerly participating in a variety of games and enjoying some much-needed fun. Later that day, our Benefits Day Fair at the West Detention Center was both informative and festive. The food trucks provided by Cigna were a big hit, offering meals that were as appreciated as they were tasty.

Wednesday, May 7: Wellness Day offered staff a chance to recharge and focus on self-care. The Main Detention Center, West Detention Center, Inmate Management, Corrections Court, Staff and Standards, Corrections Support Services, Corrections Contract Compliance, and Inmate Records participated, and the energy was refreshingly positive. Agency Support Services showed their support by providing meals to all personnel on every shift, further reinforcing a sense of unity and care.

Thursday, May 8: The excitement continued with Game Day at the West Detention Center and the Benefits Fair at MDC. Staff feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the opportunity to engage, unwind, and learn about available resources. Once again, Cigna-supported food trucks helped keep spirits high and stomachs full.

Friday, May 9: We wrapped up the week with Raffle Day, generating buzz and friendly anticipation at both MDC and WDC. The generous lunch provided by our Sheriff for the Bravo Shift was met with smiles and heartfelt thanks. But the highlight of the day–and perhaps the week–was the Bowling Tournament held at Sparez in Davie, Florida. Teams from Dade County, Broward County, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons joined us for a thrilling and good-natured competition. Our department proudly took second place, and the atmosphere was electric with team spirit and camaraderie.

What made the tournament even more special was the participation of our retired correctional officers, who came out in full force to compete and cheer us on. Their presence reminded us that the connection between past and present remains strong, and their continued involvement speaks to the deep pride and lasting fellowship found within our ranks. Seeing former colleagues rewrite with current staff was both heartwarming and inspiring–it truly embodied the spirit of National Correctional Officers and Employees Week.

This year’s celebration not only honored our staff but also helped us build a lasting relationship with our peers from Dade, Broward, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. We’re proud of the new friendships forged and grateful for the opportunity to celebrate alongside fellow professionals who share our mission.

As we look ahead to 2026, we are filled with excitement for what’s to come. We plan to expand our events, welcome back even more retired friends, and continue to strengthen this growing family of dedicated correctional professionals. National Correctional Officer and Employee Week has become a cornerstone of pride, morale, and tradition within our department, and we thank the American Jail Association for inspiring and encouraging these moments of unity across the nation.

We first highlighted or main jail facility in San Jose, where 470 badge and civilian staff are assigned.

Next, we visited the Elmwood Correctional Complex in Milpitas, California, where there’s a women’s facility staffed by 85 sworn staff, additional volunteers, and program staff. In the men’s facility, there are more than 350 sworn and administrative staff, as well as additional volunteers and program staff.

Finally, we rolled out by spotlighting our Transportation Division, which safely moved nearly 200,000 people last year and drove more than 391,000 miles. We’re immensely proud of our entire staff who works hard every day to make our communities safe and secure!

During National Correctional Officers Week, the Tate County Sheriff’s Office proudly celebrated the dedication and hard work of its corrections staff with a week of appreciation and good food. Each day, staff were treated to a meal, including pizza, barbecue, hamburgers, hot dogs, and donuts. Volusia County Division of Corrections

Daytona Beach, Florida

The Volusia County Division of Corrections did an amazing job recognizing the hard-working employees in the division for National Corrections Officer and Employee Week. It was a Herculean team effort from all employees to help serve and deliver meals all week. Vendor participation from Aramark, Keefe, and VitalCore was greatly appreciated.

The Volusia County Division of Corrections kicked off National Corrections Officer and Employee Week with the employee of the shift ceremony. The Employee of the Shift ceremony is a semi-annual event that honors employees nominated by their supervisors and voted on by their peers. Family members of all nominees are invited to attend. The nominees and winners include one officer of the shift per building for the Volusia County Branch Jail and the Volusia County Correctional Facility, division-wide awards for one Sergeant of the Shift, one Lieutenant of the Shift, and one Civilian of the Shift. This is a great way for the division to recognize and celebrate the efforts of staff year-round. During the employee of the shift ceremony, the division took time to honor and remember a recently fallen corrections officer. Light refreshments were also provided.

One member of the Volusia County Council presented the proclamation on-site before the food was served for Nurses Week on Monday, and two members of the Volusia County Council presented the proclamation for Corrections Officer and Employee Week on Wednesday.

The corrections week celebration started Monday with catered food for all employees at 1100 hours and 1800 hours from a local restaurant serving Puerto Rican cuisine. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday Bar-B-Que meals were provided for all employees at 1100 hours and 1800 hours. The county covered the food cost, and a team of multiple dedicated employees smoked and cooked all the food starting at 0400 hours and finishing around 1800 hours. Friday was catered local Italian food for all employees at 1100 hours and 1800 hours. Meals were delivered off-site to employees assigned to hospital duty and those attending the corrections academy all week.

As we celebrate Corrections Officers and Employees, the Division also wanted to encourage continued wellness strategies to maintain a happy and healthy Division. A health advocate and a well-being strategist from Cigna Health were on site, meeting with employees, providing physical and mental health coaching, and resources during meal servings on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. A representative from the County Human Resources department was on site reviewing benefits and ensuring beneficiaries were up to date.

Walton County Sheriff’s Office

DeFuniak Springs, Florida

“Behind every secure facility is a team of correctional staff who risk their safety daily to protect the public, enforce justice, and maintain order.”

The Walton County Jail, located in DeFuniak Springs, Forida, is operated by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) and has been an accredited facility since 2012. With a capacity of 596 beds and an average daily population of 280 inmates, the jail serves as the primary detention center for Walton County, housing both pretrial detainees and sentenced inmates. Staffed by over 140 sworn and non-sworn personnel, the facility accommodates minimum, medium, and maximum-security classifications.

Each year, a week in May is set aside to honor the dedicated professionals working in our nation’s correctional facilities. In 2025, National Nurses Day coincided with this week of recognition, inspiring the Walton County Sheriff’s Office to form a dedicated Employee Appreciation Team to ensure the celebrations were both meaningful and memorable.

A customized “Thank You” banner for both nurses and correctional staff was proudly displayed at the entrance of the Sheriff’s Office complex as a daily reminder of our gratitude to the hardworking men and women who serve our facility.

Throughout the week, employees were treated to breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared and served by the Command Staff of the Walton County Detention Facility. Breakfast was served each morning at 4:30 AM to accommodate both the incoming day shift and the outgoing night shift, with service continuing through 8:30 AM. The menu featured freshly prepared eggs, biscuits, white sausage gravy, tomato gravy, and sausage patties, ensuring every employee had the opportunity to enjoy a hot meal donated by Sysco.

Lunch and dinner menus were thoughtfully rotated to offer variety each day. One highlight included spaghetti with garlic bread, generously provided by Hurricane Oyster Bar and Grill in Grayton Beach, FL. Another featured meal included pulled BBQ pork, baked potatoes, and baked beans, along with toppings for loaded potatoes—courtesy of Sweet Southern Comfort in DeFuniak Springs, FL, with the assistance of Disposal Service LLC, L&A Logging, Inc, Clary-Glenn Funeral Home & Crematory, Walton County Teachers FCU, and Fannin’s Family Restaurant.

The week provided not only delicious meals but also a valuable opportunity for staff to gather, connect, and share in the camaraderie that defines our agency.

Generous community support helped make our employee prize drawings a major success. Local businesses and partners donated a wide range of items, including:

Gift baskets feature items such as coolers, table saws, drill and tool sets, as well as hunting and fishing gear.

Gift cards ranging from $25 to $100 for experiences, including spa days and dining at local restaurants.

One custom cornhole board set showcasing the WCSO logo, handcrafted by the Walton County Department of Corrections woodworking program.

Four local fishing charter trips, each valued between $600 and $700.

A total of 122 gifts were included in the drawing, ensuring that every staff member within the Jail Division, ranked Sergeant and below, had the opportunity to have their name drawn, allowing each team member to win a gift.

A TEAMS meeting was held to ensure all staff, whether on-site or off-duty, could participate in the prize drawings. Each employee also received a gift bag filled with snacks, made possible through the generous support of Stewart, our commissary vendor. Thanks to additional community partners, every staff member received a free meal combo card from both Wendy’s and Chick-fil-A, along with a complimentary car wash card provided by Sud Stop Car Wash—all included in their gift bags as a token of our appreciation.

The WCSO Jail Division’s Vision is: “A team of professionals committed to protecting the public, maintaining order, and building better people.” This celebration week served as a powerful reminder of that mission, offering time to acknowledge the dedication of our team, support one another, and reflect on the importance of the work we do each day.
