We need good people from every part of the nation to continue the tradition of dedication and commitment set by current and previous officers and board members. Election time is coming, and the Nominating Committee of the American Jail Association is selecting candidates for the following positions:
Third Vice President
In this election, we will be electing a Second and Third Vice President. Vice Presidents serve consecutive terms until rising to President. In this election, the candidate receiving the highest number of votes will assume the role of Second Vice President. The next highest vote total will assume the role of Third Vice President.
Duties of the Second Vice President:
- Chair the Membership Committee and perform other such duties or serve on such committees as the board or the by-laws may prescribe.
Eligibility for elected office is contingent upon service of at least two years as a member of the Board of Directors.
Duties of the Third Vice President:
- Serve as a mentor to the newly elected board and serve on such committees as the board or by-laws may prescribe.
Eligibility for elected office is contingent upon service of at least two years as a member of the Board of Directors.
Treasurer
This person will be a member of the Executive Committee.
Duties of the Treasurer:
- Attends all meetings of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.
- Books of Accounts: the Treasurer shall keep and maintain, or cause to be kept and maintained, adequate and correct books and accounts of the corporation’s properties and transactions.
This is a two-year term. Eligibility for elected office is contingent upon service of at least two years as a member of the Board of Directors.
Sergeant-at-Arms
The Sergeant-at-Arms is a voting member of the Executive Committee, responsible for supporting order, logistics, and investigative functions in accordance to the by-laws.
Duties of the Sergeant-at-Arms
- Assist the President in maintaining order during meetings.
- Verify that all individuals attending official meetings of the corporation are authorized to do so.
- Oversee access to meetings, ensure appropriate seating arrangements, and distribute necessary materials.
- Keep time for speakers and presentations to maintain the meeting schedule.
- Intervene in cases of disruptions to uphold decorum.
Eligibility for elected office is contingent upon service of at least two years as a member of the Board of Directors.
Parliamentarian
This person will be a voting member of the Executive Committee and a key advisor on matters of parliamentary procedure.
This is a one-year election intended to align the Parliamentarian position with the Secretary's election cycle. The position will appear on the ballot again in the next election, at which time it will transition to a standard two-year cycle.
Duties of the Parliamentarian
- Attend all meetings of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
- Advise the presiding officer at meetings on the proper rules of order for conducting meetings in accordance with Robert's Rules of Orders Revisted and the by-laws.
- Chairs the By-Laws Committee and oversees recommendations for amendments.
- Provide guidance during conflicts or disputes about procedural issues to ensure compliance with organizational rules.
Eligibility for elected office is contingent upon service of at least two years as a member of the Board of Directors.
Board of Members
Elected Board Members serve for a three-year term.
Duties of the Board of Directors
- Attends all meetings of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
- Sets the policy of the Association.
- Establishes the annual business plan and budget of the Association.
- Verifies that the Association is fulfilling its mission.
Board members and elected officers will be installed at the 2026 conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
General Guidelines
- Persons seeking nominations must be individual professional members for at least one full year by October 31, 2025. To seek election on the AJA Board, Agency, Corporate, Affiliate, and Student memberships do not meet the above individual membership requirement.
- Only written nominations and justifications are considered by the Committee, and nominees must be endorsed by a minimum of one member in good standing. Those nominated themselves must be endorsed by a minimum of two members in good standing.
- Individuals nominated for one office can be considered for another office.
- The Committee gives consideration to geography and agency size so that nominees reflect the diversity of the Association's membership.
- Nominees, if elected, are required to attend the following conference events and other functions in Milwaukee:
- Business Meeting & Luncheon
- Board meeting
- New board member orientation
- Awards Banquet
Elections are conducted in accordance with the provisions of Article VIII of the Bylaws.
Nominations must be postmarked no later than October 31, 2025. Nominations after that date will not be considered.
