Monica Lyons, MBA
Training Coordinator Arlington County Sheriff's Office
Arlington, Virginia
Hello, my name is Monica Lyons, MBA. I bring you greetings from the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office located in Arlington, Virginia. I am a 19-year veteran currently serving as the Training Coordinator.
One item from my personal "bucket list" is to...
Travel to new places around the world that I have never been before, at least once a year.
My motto is...
"The only thing constant in the world is change—be adaptable.”
I am most proud of...
The woman I have grown to be. I am also incredibly proud of my son, who inspires me to be better every day.
I decided to enter the field of corrections and make it my career because...
It literally fell into my lap. After college, I was working as a loss prevention detective for Macy’s when I was recruited by a civil processing deputy. One opportunity led to another, and now, 19 years later, I truly love what I do.
My favorite way to relax is...
Traveling—especially to places where the sun rises over turquoise water.
You'd be surprised to learn that...
I was a cheerleader in both high school and college, and I coached high school cheerleading for many years.
The most unusual job I’ve ever had was...
Before college, I worked as a server at IHOP and a barista at Starbucks. I don’t consider those unusual, but they were great experiences that helped build my work ethic and customer service skills.
I felt it was important to be a member of AJA and serve on the board because...
I enjoy learning and stepping outside of my comfort zone. I’m grateful to my command leadership, Sheriff Qurioz, Chief Gelabert, and Major Burgess for encouraging me to take this leap. I believe my abilities and experience will bring value to the team as we continue to promote growth and development within the profession of corrections through the American Jail Association.
Three people living or deceased I'd invite to dinner are...
Michelle Obama.
The hardest thing I've ever done is...
Probably raising my child. There is no concrete guide to parenting, and it requires constant learning, patience, and growth.
My favorite meal is...
Grilled lamb chops with asparagus or broccoli. I also love seafood, especially blue crab, and an occasional hot fudge brownie with vanilla ice cream.
One piece of advice that I would give anyone considering correction as a career is...
Make sure it is truly the profession for you. In corrections, we wear many hats and must demonstrate patience, strong customer service skills, and professionalism every day.
