Executive Director’s Remarks

Join Us at AJA's Conference & Jail Expo: Celebrating Leadership, Networking, and Innovations in Corrections

…the past few years have been phenomenal in terms of positively impacting the public safety of our local communities…

When most people think about the AJA Conference & Jail Expo, many things come to mind. The exceptional workshops focused on jails, the many lasting connections formed during the memorable networking events, the recognition of colleagues who have distinguished themselves, getting reacquainted with old friends and colleagues, the awe-inspiring exhibit floor - the list goes on and on. For the many volunteers who generously gave their time and the AJA Headquarters Staff, it is tremendously rewarding to see a lot of hard work come together into one momentous event.

Another important aspect of the conference is the transition of officers and directors that occurs during the Annual Business Meeting. New members of the Board of Directors are sworn in, and, sadly, some members depart from the Board having faithfully fulfilled their fiduciary responsibilities to the association.

Louis Quiñones, CCE, CJM, will transition from his role as the Past President. Chief Quiñones distinguished himself as an exceptional leader while serving as an officer. His level of dedication and professionalism promoted the highest standards of conduct among his fellow Board members.

Shawn Laughlin, MCJ, CJM, will transition from President to Past President. Commander Laughlin demonstrated incredible tenacity in holding his fellow officers and the AJA staff to the highest standards. Under his leadership, AJA evolved into a more effective and respected organization among its association partners, federal agencies, and lawmakers. He set the stage for AJA to continue its steady progress towards ensuring that local corrections have a voice.

Commander Laughlin will hand the reigns of leadership over to Shaun Klucznik, MA, CJM, who has been in lockstep with him in expeditiously moving AJA forward as being the leader in supporting the professionals who operate our nation’s jails.

Great leadership matters! In the case of AJA, the past few years have been phenomenal in terms of positively impacting the public safety of our local communities, and as I look at the line up of future AJA leaders, I am extremely confident that trend will continue.

I invite you to come to AJA’s Conference & Jail Expo in Fort Worth, Texas, from May 17–21, 2025, where you will have the opportunity to witness the transitioning of our new board members for the 2025–2026 year.
