JMCC Profile

Reese Walker, CJM, Administrative Captain, Shelby County Division of Corrections, Memphis, Tennessee

Hello, my name is Reese Walker. I serve as the Administrative Captain for Shelby County Division of Corrections with 25 years of service. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Mississippi Valley State University and I am a graduate of the NJLCA class #15 and a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

I decided to enter the field of corrections and make it my career because… While in College I decided I wanted a career that would provide me an opportunity to help others as well provide me with job stability.

What quote do you find to be the most inspirational and why? “Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.” Nelson Mandela. His quote reminds me to keep my eyes on the prize and continue to lean and depend my GOD to see me through.

Explain what you feel is the importance of professional jail certification… Facilities are looking at certification as a way to assess whether an individual possesses the skills and knowledge required for successful performance in a particular job role. By becoming certified in your field of expertise, and maintaining your competency year after year, you are saying to your employer that you have met standards that have been established and verified by a third-party organization. It also says that you are dedicated to maintaining quality in your work on a regular basis.

The most unusual job I’ve ever had was… Working at a Theme Amusement Park as a Ride Operator.

The hardest thing I’ve ever done is… Dealing with the grieving process in loss of my mother.

One item from my personal “bucket list” is to…Tour the Colosseum in Rome.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?… The most influential person in my life is my mother Nettie Mae Walker. My dad has influenced me too, but my mom inspired me with her work ethic and caring for others. She was very hardworking which inspires me as well to work hard and give my best efforts as possible. I remembered that at each turn and every moment of my life she gave me an important advice and life lessons which is probably not written in the books. I will always think of her life lessons.
