Board Profile

Jonathan Ede, MSCJ, CJM

Captain Travis County Sheriff's Office

Austin, Texas

Hello, my name is Jonathan Ede, MSCJ, CJM. I am a Captain with the Travis County Sheriff's Office in Austin, Texas. I have nearly two decades of experience working in adult corrections in the same county. I currently oversee the operations of the Health Services Security and Infrastructure divisions of the Corrections Bureau. I hold a Master Jailer and Master Peace Officer License in the state of Texas. Along with my board duties, I also serve on several committees for the American Jail Association.

I decided to enter the field of corrections and make it my career because...

I was looking for a position that would help me transition into “traditional” law enforcement. However, I became fascinated by the underlying principles of effective correctional practice and the potential for positive impact. I was fortunate to have mentors who nurtured my curiosity and provided opportunities for growth. My first AJA conference was a pivotal moment, solidifying my commitment to this path. Being recognized as Officer of the Year further validated my decision.

My favorite way to relax is...

Listening to a variety of science, human performance, and nutrition podcasts. My wife has learned that if I am enjoying a podcast, many household duties will be willingly accomplished.

One item from my personal "bucket list" is to...

Visit and go hiking in the Swiss Alps.

My motto is...

“Nothing good comes easy,” This motto is very meaningful as it is a reminder that the most worthwhile goals demand effort. Obstacles are expected, making success more meaningful. Hard work builds resilience and fosters a determined mindset.

I am most proud of...

All the corrections professionals who steadfastly served within our nation’s jails during the challenges of the past several years, especially the fine men and women of TCSO, whose unwavering commitment exemplifies true character and a genuine understanding of service above self.my mom and my kids.

The most unusual job I’ve ever had was...

Delivering auto glass while in college to save up to pay for my Lasik procedure.

I felt it was important to be a member of AJA and serve on the board because...

AJA has given me invaluable resources and support over the years and has been crucial to my professional development, helping me stay informed about best practices and advance my skills. The true value has been in the community. Being able to connect with other jail professionals has been incredibly helpful. One of the biggest reasons I have continued to be involved is due to the advocacy AJA’s does for our profession, ensuring the importance of our work is recognized. Serving on the board is my way of paying it forward.

Three people living or deceased I'd invite to dinner are...

Both of my grandfathers and General Colin Powell.

The hardest thing I've ever done is...

The night one of my agency’s family members lost their battle with mental health. I went to shift to speak with the rest of the team about what had transpired then went to see the family to be present as the news was delivered to them.

My favorite meal is...

Nigerian Jollof Rice and Sweet Plantain.

You would be surprised to learn that...

A Certified Krav Maga Instructor and Kettlebell Coach.

One piece of advice that I would give anyone considering correction as a career is...

You have the power to make a real difference. It’s a challenging path, but also deeply rewarding. You’ll help people towards positive change, develop invaluable skills, and become part of a strong, supportive team.
