Board Profile
Janet Parker, NCCS
Lieutenant Shelby County Sheriff's Office
Columbiana, Alabama
Hello, my name is Janet Parker, NCCS. I began my career in corrections in 1997 as a jail deputy at the Shelby County, AL, Sheriff's Office. After serving eight years in direct inmate management, I received the distinction of being the first female promoted at the Shelby County Jail, and in August 2023 was the first female lieutenant promoted in the jail. I am a proud graduate of Jacksonville State University, the National Jail Leadership Command Academy, NJLCA Mentor, and National Certified Corrections Supervisor. I currently serve my state association and in my fourth term as the Secretary for the Alabama Jail Association.
I decided to enter the field of corrections and make it my career because...
I was interested in law enforcement and thought it would be good experience before pursuing other jobs. Little did I know that corrections would become my passion. 26 years is a long time but when you love what you do, time sure does fly!
My favorite way to relax is...
to read.
One item from my personal "bucket list" is to...
to be a contestant on Press Your Luck! I want to say "no whammy, no whammy, and STOP!" I also want to open my own boutique...after retirement.
My motto is...
to treat others as you would like to be treated.
I am most proud of...
the career I have made at Shelby County Sheriff's Office. I began year 27 on November 14, 2024, and I am so thankful for every single opportunity I have been given.
The most unusual job I’ve ever had was...
being employed by an insurance agency and doing data entry work. It was boring!
I felt it was important to be a member of AJA and serve on the board because...
of my passion for corrections and to have the opportunity to share my experience and passion with others. It is truly an honor to be among these corrections professionals.
Three people living or deceased I'd invite to dinner are...
President Trump, Miranda Lambert, and Reese Witherspoon
The hardest thing I've ever done is...
watch my grandmother take her last breaths and say goodbye to her.
My favorite meal is...
steak with a loaded baked potato and salad.
You would be surprised to learn that...
I love to clean and organize.
One piece of advice that I would give anyone considering correction as a career is...
to follow their dream and go for it. While it is a stressful field to work in, it is also rewarding. I would say to them "this profession needs dedicated people who want to make a difference."
