Henry Reyes
MAM, MPA, CJM, CCE, NCCE, Chief Deputy Tarrant County Sheriff's Office Fort Worth, Texas
Hello, my name is Chief Deputy Henry Reyes, MAM, MPA, CJM, CCE, and NCCE. I started my career in corrections in 1999 and worked for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office in San Antonio, Texas for over 17 years. There, I rose through the ranks from Deputy to Deputy Chief and specialized in jail classification, gang intelligence, and jail operations. I now work for the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office in Fort Worth, Texas where I have been a Chief Deputy over Housing in the Detention Bureau since 2017.
I decided to enter the field of corrections and make it my career because...
I genuinely fell in love with the challenges of working with an at-risk population presented. I found that my ability to talk to people and unite the efforts of a group toward a common goal was a perfect fit for the field of corrections.
My favorite way to relax is...
by spending time with my friends and family at the pool or traveling to new places and creating memories.
One item from my personal "bucket list" is to...
to visit Thailand with my wife and meet her maternal side of the family.
My motto is...
“Being nice to people is both the easiest and hardest thing you can do. However, it costs you nothing, and the return on treating people with kindness is invaluable.”
I am most proud of...
my wife. She is an amazing mother and spouse, and her professional accomplishments fuel me to work hard and be a better officer, husband, and father.
The most unusual job I’ve ever had was...
selling newspaper subscriptions as a teenager. I would go door to door and try and meet all sorts of interesting people.
I felt it was important to be a member of AJA and serve on the board and commission...
building a solid network and accessing relevant training was very important to me. I learned that these two components were essential to my personal and professional success and key to ensuring my agency was staying current and educated with what is going on in the field of corrections.
Three people living or deceased I'd invite to dinner are...
Jesus Christ, Albert Einstein, and my late father.
The hardest thing I've ever done is...
work in the same housing area as the person convicted of taking my sister’s life. I came face to face with my sister’s convicted killer when I was a sergeant. I know that I had a couple of choices on how to respond. I opted to stand firm in the oath I had taken just ten years before and acted professionally. That decision has made all the difference, and I often share the experience with recruits.
My favorite meal is...
pad see ewe. It is a sweet Thai noodle dish with vegetables and beef.
You would be surprised to learn that...
I credit all my successes and accomplishments to God. Working in corrections can take its toll on the mind, body, and spirit. My faith and commitment to being a better person have helped me maintain a positive outlook on life that allows me to lead with a servant’s heart. I genuinely believe the men and women I have the honor of leading are the backbone of my department.
One piece of advice that I would give anyone considering correction as a career is...
to work hard at finding the delicate balance between life, work, fun, and family. The impact the unique stressors of working in corrections will have on your life requires you to take a holistic approach to wellness. Take this seriously. Focus on a healthy “you” so you can be your best officer, parent, spouse, and friend.
