Middle River Regional Jail (MRRJ) was established to alleviate the increasing jail population at the former Augusta County Jail in Staunton, Virginia. MRRJ is built on 28 acres, which is conveniently located in close proximity to the I-81 and I-64 interchange in Augusta County.

MRRJ was originally established with the County of Augusta and the Cities of Staunton and Waynesboro as members. In 2015, the City of Harrisonburg and County of Rockingham joined the Middle River Regional Jail Board Authority, which consists of the county administrator, sheriff or chief of police, and the finance director from each jurisdiction for a total of 15 members.

The building’s 212,020 square feet has a rated capacity for 396 inmates. Our jail population generally exceeds 800 inmates per day, and the facility has been operating at 200% capacity for several years. MRRJ houses both female and male inmates.

MRRJ prides itself with the variety of innovative programming offered to inmates. Programs focus on addressing the underlying causes of addiction and criminal decision-making. Additional programs focus on providing inmates with the opportunity to change and return to the community as productive members.
