Board Profile

Elsie Judon

MS, Lieutenant Colonel, Director of Operations Broward Sheriff's Office Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

Hello, my name is Elsie Judon. I began a journey in corrections that ultimately changed my professional development in the field of corrections. I was initially hired as a civilian employee with the Broward Sheriff’s Office and later decided to attend the corrections academy to become a sworn detention deputy. Today, I serve as the Director of Operations for the Broward Sheriff’s Office–Department of Detention and Community Programs overseeing all jail facility operations within Broward County.

I decided to enter the field of corrections and make it my career because...

of my desire to provide help to those who were incapable or unfamiliar with navigating through the criminal justice system.

My favorite way to relax is...

going to the gym.

One item from my personal "bucket list" is to...

to participate in the Disney Princess Half Marathon.

My motto is...

“If you want to change the world, start by making your bed.” This is a notable quote from U.S. Navy Admiral William H. McRaven’s University of Texas Commencement Speech that serves as my daily mantra, reminding me that the little things in life are significant and really matter.

I am most proud of...

my family. They continue to inspire me to be a better person.

The most unusual job I’ve ever had was...

working as a claims investigator for a local bank.

I felt it was important to be a member of AJA and serve on the board and commission...

attending my very first conference eight years ago. I remember walking away from the conference wanting to be a part of an organization committed to making our profession greater. Serving on the AJA board allows me the ability to be an active participant in shaping the future of our profession.

The hardest thing I've ever done is...

completing a 30-day juice fast.

Three people living or deceased I'd invite to dinner are...

Michelle Obama for her command presence, Amelia Earhart for her bravery, and Muhammad Ali for his self-confidence. These are all individuals who personally inspire me to be a better version of myself.

My favorite meal is...

blackened salmon and asparagus.

You would be surprised to learn that...

I am in love with all things purple.

One piece of advice that I would give anyone considering correction as a career is...

to just do it! The decision will be the best decision ever made because the opportunities are limitless.
