The most unusual job I have ever had was... I have not really had any unusual jobs growing up. I have worked all sorts of jobs in high school, from fast food and lawn work to security jobs before landing in corrections when I graduated college.
One item from my personal "bucket list" is to... go back to school and obtain my Doctorate Degree. It is something that has been on my list for a while that I hope to someday accomplish.
JMCC Profile
Leon Valquier, MPA, CJM, Captain of Staff Development, Douglas County Department of Corrections, Omaha, Nebraska
Hello, my name is Leon Valquier, MPA, CJM. I am Captain of Staff Development at Douglas County Department of Corrections in Omaha, NE. I started by career as a Corrections Officer in 2003 and was promoted through the ranks to my current role in 2019. I hold a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a master's degree in public administration. I have also had the honor of graduating from the National Jail Leadership Command Academy Class #24 and the Jail Executive Institute Class #1.
I decided to enter the field of corrections and make it my career because… when I graduated high school, I knew that I wanted to work in law enforcement; it had always interested me, and I knew it was a goal to strive for. Once I started my career in corrections, I thought I would gain some experience and then find something more suitable. What I didn't know was that I would really like what I did, and that I would make it a career. Corrections brought me out of my shell and taught me how to communicate with others. I also learned that I liked to help others, not just the incarcerated population, but my fellow officers as well. It turned into a passion for me.
What quote do you find to be the most inspirational and why?… "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A simple quote, yet a powerful one, and it is a motto I try to follow every day. I strive to help others in any way I can, whether it be at work, church, or my community. I truly believe there is no greater satisfaction in life than helping others.
Explain what you feel is the importance of professional jail certification?… Professional certification provides a way for correctional professionals to show that they are knowledgeable in the most up-to-date correctional practices. It shows your commitment to the profession and your willingness to further yourself through education and continued course work.
Who has been the most influential person in your life? How have they helped you become the person you are today? My father. He has always been a hardworking man, everything he did was for his family, and he would always put our needs ahead of his without complaining. He showed me how hard work and perseverance can pay off, and although the world can be an intimidating place, you can accomplish your goals and dreams if you put your mind to it. Having a solid foundation at home with the right morals and values has defintely helped me become who I am today.
The hardest thing I have ever done is... being a father. Having six kids is not an easy task, especially during these times with social media and all the other distractions. It can be a daunting task to try and be the best version of yourself while trying to make sure you are there for your kids in every way possible.
