Shawn Laughlin, MCJ, CJM
Commander Broomfield Detention Center Broomfield, Colorado
Hello, my name is Shawn Laughlin, MCJ, CJM. I have had the privilege to work in this profession for the past 28 years. As the Commander of the Broomfield Detention Center, I’ve been able to travel all over the U.S., meeting the most amazing people who share my passion for corrections. As the 2024–25 AJA President, I look forward to meeting and collaborating with everyone as we continue to highlight and promote the amazing work that you all do for our profession. GO AJA!
I decided to enter the field of corrections and make it my career because...
I felt that the correctional system can have a greater impact in society than the other parts of the system, so I chose to work in jails over the past 28 years. I’ve stayed because of the amazing people that I get to collaborate with every day.
My favorite way to relax is...
hiking in the mountains.
One item from my personal "bucket list" is to...
spend a month in Ireland and Scotland researching my heritage.
My motto is...
if you can’t have some fun at work…stay home!
I am most proud of...
my kids going out into the world, blazing their own trails.
The most unusual job I’ve ever had was...
kitchen duties while in the Army. I never peeled so many potatoes in my entire life.
I felt it was important to be a member of AJA and serve on the board because...
in my opinion, the correctional system is by far the most important of the entire criminal justice system. I wanted a job that can actually have an impact on my community. The American Jail Association is the ONLY voice that allows me to have the impact I need to have in my chosen profession.
Three people living or deceased I'd invite to dinner are...
my paternal grandfather who passed away before I was born, President Ronald Reagan, and Abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
The hardest thing I've ever done is...
saying goodbye to those who left our world too soon.
My favorite meal is...
lasagna.
You would be surprised to learn that...
with my blended family, I have seven kids.
One piece of advice that I would give anyone considering correction as a career is...
it won’t be easy, but you’ll become more than you knew you could be. The challenges make us into better versions of ourselves. be prepared to join the most critical part of the criminal justice system! The men and women you'll be working with are the most caring, compassionate, intelligent, and giving group of humans on the planet. Seek and find a sound work-life balance that you can be proud of. Live YOUR best life every day!
