Board Profile
Fred Meyer, MA, CJM, CCHP
Managing Director, NCCHC Resources Deputy Chief (Retired) Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Las Vegas, Nevada
Hello, my name is Fred W. Meyer, MA, CJM, CCHP. I’m currently employed in a senior leadership position by the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare (NCCHC) and am a retired deputy chief with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. I have nearly 30 years of correctional experience and currently serve on the AJA Board of Directors as Parliamentarian. I hold a master’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
I decided to enter the field of corrections and make it my career because...
in the mid-90s, I was a college intern with a sheriff’s department and was offered a full-time position in the jail. I found the culture to be more interesting and challenging than any environment I had worked in prior. Somehow, it got in my soul and I’m still engaged with jail operations on a national-level.
My favorite way to relax is...
spending time with my beautiful wife, children, and friends. Weekend barbecues, swimming, and golfing.
One item from my personal "bucket list" is to...
to someday sell our home and move onto a yacht full time. There’s always been something relaxing about the ocean.
My motto is...
“Well done is better than well said.”
I am most proud of...
being a husband and father. Only slightly behind that is working with outstanding custody, medical, and mental health leaders in one of the most honorable professions.
The most unusual job I’ve ever had was...
working as a route sails and delivery driver for a purified water distribution in Chicago, Illinois.
I felt it was important to be a member of AJA and serve on the board because...
the people working in our nation’s jails are the unsung heroes of the criminal justice system. I want to continue contributing and drive the professionalization of our field and work to generate the recognition corrections professions deserve.
Three people living or deceased I'd invite to dinner are...
one of my first mentors, Ernie Campbell, my grandfather Fred, and my family because they’re a cool group of people.
The hardest thing I've ever done is...
speaking with the family of an officer who died by suicide.
My favorite meal is...
smoked brisket when we have family and friends over.
You would be surprised to learn that...
my wife and I are into saltwater aquariums. At one point, we had over 900 gallons of aquariums in our home with various fish, sharks, rays, and tanks with hard and soft coral.
One piece of advice that I would give anyone considering correction as a career is...
it would be to know that what you see on social media is not accurate and corrections is a true profession. Educate yourself, meet with people in the field, tour your local jail. It takes a special person to choose this career, but for many who do it’s challenging and rewarding. You will make a difference in this world.
